Shakespeare 400th Anniversary Celebration - Jacobean Strollers Concert in Esher

The Jacobean Strollers – A Shakespeare 400th Anniversary Celebration

For Music on the Green’s closing contribution to the Shakespeare 400th anniversary celebrations, the Strollers are including readings, such as the opening speech from The Winter’s Tale which sets the scene ‘off the seacoast of Bohemia’ and ends with the infamous stage direction ‘Exit, pursued by a bear’. There will also be extracts from Twelfth Night, Henry V, Cymbeline and Midsummer Night’s Dream

The Jacobean Strollers met whilst attending a Theatre Music course at Shakespeare’s Globe. They have since enjoyed performing as a ‘mixed consort’, featuring the music of the fascinating Bohemian composer Heinrich von Biber and his contemporaries. One aspect of the course involved looking at the extensive references to music in Shakespeare’s texts.

About Music On The Green

MUSIC on the GREEN is based at Christ Church Esher directly opposite and overlooking Esher Green. Its aims are to promote a wide variety of excellent music, to present music in a fresh and engaging way, and to encourage audiences from Esher and beyond.
Our concerts take place in Christ Church at the heart of Esher – a church which boasts an outstanding pipe organ, fine grand piano acquired in 2012 with a very generous loan, and good acoustics which all contribute to making our music so enjoyable.

MUSIC on the GREEN is about making music which is accessible to, and enjoyable by, as many people as possible without it being stuffy or cheapened. This is the reason for the MUSIC on the GREEN ‘brand’ – to give the music an identity of its own.
Music is about people, emotions, history… We blend all these ingredients and seek to present our music in interesting and rewarding ways, within its own context so that it can be widely appreciated and enjoyed. Whilst having our firmest foot planted at the classical end of the spectrum, we seek to offer a rich and varied listening programme.
