Meals On Wheels Volunteering – With Elmbridge Mayor
Meals out with the Mayor
In celebration of National Volunteers’ Week from 1-7 June 2019, The Worshipful Mayor of the Borough of Elmbridge Councillor Mrs Mary Sheldon volunteered for meals on wheels on Wednesday 5 May at Hersham Centre for the Community. The Mayor, accompanied by Cheryl, an experienced long serving volunteer, delivered freshly prepared meals to 15 people in Hersham (photo above).
Visiting the local community and providing nutritious food ensures recipients receive a daily wellbeing check from each volunteer. After the visits, the Mayor explained:
“This is a very local service, provided by community spirited volunteers and we cannot continue this exceptional service without them. I know each year the Council loses volunteers for a variety of reasons and that is why I have come here today to raise the profile of this fabulous service and highlight the need to recruit more meals on wheels volunteers. Volunteering for meals on wheels is flexible, and you only need to give a 2-hour commitment which could be weekly, fortnightly or when you have the time. Please consider volunteering as it really does make a huge difference”.
Councillor Mrs Shipley, the Portfolio Holder for Social Affairs commented:
“I am staggered by how many volunteers we have in Elmbridge, with Community Support Services being supported by over 400. I would encourage the public and local organisations to keep an eye on the Council’s website for more information on new volunteering opportunities. Volunteering is not only worthwhile, but it can be great fun and extremely rewarding”.
