Planning a Spring clean? Here are our ten top tips to make light work of it!

Spring is finally here, and with it comes the best intentions to carry out a good old spring clean around the house.

It’s worth sticking to the plan – when your environment is clean you feel happy, motivated and healthy. So what better way to kick off longer days and warmer weather then getting your home in order now with a good tidy up and declutter.

Spring cleaning isn’t about the day to day vacuuming or wiping down of the kitchen work surface – it’s about those deeper clean chores that done well, you only need to complete once or twice a year.

Here are some key things to focus on with some top tips to make life easier – keep things simpler by attacking one or two per day and, with not too much effort, you are on your way to a spruced up home in no time.

Carpets and upholstery

You’ll be surprised how much dirt, dust and hair can build up in your carpets and soft furnishings. This can be especially bad in bedrooms and living space, where you’re less likely to move bulky furniture around when you’re cleaning.

A deep clean will help restore colour and texture. Using a high-performance vacuum cleaner or hiring a professional will allow you to breathe new life into your carpets and sofa.

While your furniture is out of its usual place during the clean, you could think about rearranging things – a bit of a shuffle around might create extra space in a room, or just give it a new look for spring.

Top tip. For stubborn pet hair – pop on some rubber gloves, slightly dampen them and then stroke the surface to lift up the hairs.

Skirting, wood work and light fittings

While most of us dust our furniture surfaces on a regular basis, we often don’t pay attention to the less noticeable surfaces that gather dust like skirting boards. Take a quick look – if you haven’t paid them attention in a while the dust is probably now quite noticeable.

You don’t need anything special to give them a deep clean. A simple bucket of warm water with a little washing up liquid and a good quality cloth and off you go. Wipe along skirting boards, around door frames, over the top of pendant lights – and they’ll be gleaming in no time.

Revamp your wardrobe

Wardrobe space, especially in a family home, can be a fought over premium. Chances are that you don’t wear the same items all-year round so now is a great time to separate out your heavy winter clothes, thick coats, boots and winter sports wear, and let your spring and summer wardrobe take over – with plenty of space to breathe.

When you are doing this – first consider do you really still wear the winter items. Be a bit ruthless, and if the answer is no, it’s time for a trip to the charity shop.

A small self storage pod can be the ideal solution to finding a handy place to store all your heavier clothes and shoes that you won’t need again until the autumn. Your summer clothes then have plenty of space to hang crease free; and you won’t be fighting with overrun hanging rails that make getting to your clothes a daily battle.

Appliances

Oven cleaning is a time-intensive task, but a small amount of bicarbonate of soda can go a long way. Added to water in a spray bottle you’ve got your own handy oven-cleaning solution. You just need to spray the solution on the interior surfaces of your oven (avoid the heating elements), leave overnight and wipe clean the next day.

Avoid using harsh chemicals – these cause potential damage to your skin and oven. If the task seems big though, it’s well worth calling in the professionals for that ultra sparkle.

Washing machines and dishwashers deserve a clean too, so treat them to an empty wash cycle on a hot setting. You can add in specialist appliance cleaning capsules for the extra shine factor.

You probably wipe down your fridge’s interior shelves on a regular basis already, but don’t forget about the rest. Pop out door shelves and trays and wash in warm soapy water to get rid of food bacteria and spillages.

Top tip. Tackle any remaining fridge odours with half a lemon placed on a top shelf, and another at the bottom. Lemons naturally absorb odours and will leave your fridge smelling fresh.

Wash your windows and window frames

Cold weather outside, mixed with your inside central heating, may have caused damp and mildew to form around your window frames. This is another job that only needs a good wipe down with warm soapy water to get them gleaming all summer long.

It’s also worth giving your windows a good clean at the same time. It’s easier to do this on a cloudy day as you’ll have a better chance of being able to see that you have a smear free finish.

Top tip. Put some dishwasher rinse aid into hot water and use that with a microfibre cloth for super, smear free, shining windows.

Refresh your mattress

Start by stripping your bed and giving your mattress a good vacuum, using a high-performance vacuum cleaner. Make sure you press firmly into the upholstery. Use crevice tools for awkward areas.

Spot clean stains with upholstery cleaner or mild soapy water. Leave it to dry then turn your mattress and repeat.

You’ve not only cleaned your mattress – but you’ve also given it an all important seasonal turn to keep wear even and help it last longer.

Top tip. Remove your mattress protector and give it a hot wash before you put it back on. Don’t have a protector? Now is the time to get one to keep your refreshed mattress cleaner for longer.

Clear out your cupboards

This is a job we can all find easy to put off. Especially if like many of us, your way of keeping your living space tidy, especially before guests arrive, is to quickly hideaway things in that ‘cupboard under the stairs’. It’s not long until this builds up and can become a daunting task.

Before you make a start make sure you have got the time to do the job properly. Clear everything out so you can logically work out what you want to keep, recycle or store elsewhere- like the loft, garage or a self storage pod.

While the space is empty it’s time for a wipe down. And then the important bit, putting your keep items back in a tidy and logical order which will make it easier to keep the cupboard organised in the future.

Top tip. Buy some storage baskets to keep smaller items in, categorise them and add a label – it will be a lot easier to remove the basket and find the item, rather than having to search through an entire pile of things.

Deep clean your bathroom while you sleep

There is an easy way to get your bathroom clean overnight. Limescale is notoriously difficult to remove, but that is where our handy friend white vinegar can help. It’s great at breaking down those stubborn molecules to remove limescale build-up.

Use it to remove stains from the toilet, shower, bath and sink. All you need to do is spray it on and leave it to get to work while you are having sweet dreams.

Top tip. Leave the bathroom slightly ventilated overnight to remove any vinegar odours.

Top tip. Buy some storage baskets to keep smaller items in, categorise them and add a label – it will be a lot easier to remove the basket and find the item, rather than having to search through an entire pile of things.

Prep your garden

One of the most joyous things about spring is the arrival of warmer weather, and now is the time to get your garden prepared for outdoor living.

Take garden furniture out from winter storage or their protection covers and give it a good clean. A simple bucket of warm water with some washing up liquid should do the trick. Give everything a good wipe down then rinse off with the hose.

With that completed, if you have a patio area, it probably got pretty grubby over winter. If you have access to a jet-washer this will make light work of bringing it up like new for the summer ahead.

Alternatively, a bit of elbow grease may be required using a hard scrubbing brush and a mix of bleach and water. Do wear gloves to protect your hands at all times.
