Three hundred unpaid carers across Surrey are set to receive access to free online awareness sessions to help support them and their vulnerable loved ones throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Surrey Heartlands Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Surrey County Council, working with Surrey Heath CCG and North East Hampshire and Farnham CCG, have joined forces with not-for-profit community interest company Community Practitioner Alliance (CPA) to roll out free, digitally-supported one-to-one carer awareness sessions across the county.

The project, titled SUCH (Supporting Unpaid Carers at Home), will help unpaid carers gain awareness of some of the steps they need to take to create a hygienically safer environment during the pandemic, with the aim of reducing infection rates.

Alison Griffiths, Surrey County Council’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Health, said: “I am delighted to have been involved in this joint project.

“This awareness training will help our unpaid carers feel more confident in their caring roles by creating safer caring environments, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Our unpaid carers in Surrey do such an amazing job we’re pleased to be able to offer this support.”

Surrey Heartlands Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Surrey County Council working in collaboration with Surrey Heath CCG and North East Hampshire and Farnham CCG have joined forces with not-for-profit community interest company, Community Practitioner Alliance (CPA), to roll out free, digitally-supported one-to-one carer awareness sessions across the county.

The project, titled ‘SUCH (Supporting Unpaid Carers at Home), will help unpaid carers gain awareness of some of the steps they need to take to create a hygienically safer environment during the pandemic, with the aim of reducing infection rates.

Dr Sue Tresman, Independent Carers Lead at Surrey Heartlands CCG, said: “This excellent project to deliver awareness sessions will support Surrey’s independent carers in gaining understanding and establishing safe and secure caring environments for themselves and their loved ones in these times of unprecedented challenge, and beyond.”

Jo Cameron, director of social care at CPA, said: “We’re proud to be working with Surrey Heartlands CCG on this innovative project, which demonstrates the county’s commitment to supporting vulnerable people and their carers.

“Many people who are looking after loved ones on their own at home are feeling extremely isolated at present and unsure of what they need to do to minimise risk of infection.

“Our network of clinical tutors will be delivering these awareness sessions to address that problem, giving unpaid carers the chance to not only access support but to also ask any questions pertinent to their caring role.”

Carers can access the sessions by requesting a referral by way of a Surrey Carers Prescription from any health or social care professional.
