Movie Screened At Walton & Weybridge Film Society – L’Avventura
Wednesday November 21st: 8pm
L’Avventura
Director: Michelangelo Antonioni, Italy, 1960, 143 mins, Italian language, subtitles, black & white. Leading players: Gabriele Ferzetti (Sandro); Monica Vitti (Claudia); Lea Massari (Arina).
Groundbreaking film, often described as one of the best films ever made, which first brought Antonioni to world attention and acclaim.
Film Synopsis
Produced in the ‘annus mirabilis’ of Italian cinema (also released in 1960 were LuchinoVisconti’s ‘Rocco and his Brothers’ and Federico Fellini’s ‘La DolceVita’) ‘L’Avventura’ stands as a beacon of a new way of making films. Despite being booed at Cannes, it won the Jury Prize and went on to be acclaimed as one of the best films of all time.
The story, such as it is, features a wealthy group of friends on a yacht near Sicily who decide to swim to a nearby island. Arina has quarrelled with her lover, Sandro, and, in time, she cannot be found, despite searches by all. The yacht is sent for help, but to no avail. The consequences are somewhat revealing of the lives led by the privileged few.
Rather than being a film about a disappearance, it subtly depicts the lifestyle, and emptiness, of those with so much money they have none of the normal distractions such as work, responsibility, goals or purpose.

Film Notes
The boat initially used was seized by the owner for non-payment of the charter fee.
The replacement used was slightly larger, which is noticeable in some scenes.
About Our Film Society
Walton and Weybridge Film Society meet at roughly three-weekly intervals on Wednesday evenings, commencing at 8pm at the Cecil Hepworth Playhouse, Hurst Grove (off Hepworth Way), Walton-on-Thames to watch well regarded (mostly recent) films that have probably not been shown in our local cinemas. The programme for this season is listed in the application form (see below).
The venue is owned by Elmbridge Council and used mainly by amateur dramatic societies but it is also very suitable for film shows, with tiered seating and the usual amenities.
Refreshments are provided without charge in a side room after each show and film club members are invited to discuss their reactions to the movie with the Committee and other members.
If you live in Walton or Weybridge or close to this area (for example Hersham, Shepperton, Cobham, Esher), why not join us?
If you would like to join our Film Society, please print off This Application Form and mention the All About Weybridge website.
