Elmbridge Mencap – Regular Activities, Including Adult Social Club & Youth Club
News – Chosen As Elmbridge Mayor’s Charity
Elmbridge Mencap are delighted to announce that we have been selected by the new Mayor of Elmbridge, Mayor Mary Sheldon, to be her supported local charity during her Mayoral Year 2019/20.
“We are honoured to have been chosen by the Mayor and look forward to working with her for the benefit of those with Learning Disabilities in the Elmbridge area” said John Reeves, Chairman of Elmbridge Mencap.
In the borough of Elmbridge there are almost 2,000 adults and children registered with Learning disabilities. Elmbridge Mencap has been in existence for almost 65 years and is focused on improving their lives and that of their parents and carers. We provide leisure activities, including social clubs (youth and adult), family fun days, film nights and activities for people with Learning Disabilities.
We are primarily run by a small core of part-time staff and volunteers and have to be totally financially self-sufficient.
We have recently embarked on a very exciting project – building a Sensory Garden in the grounds of Burview Hall, Walton-on-Thames, where we are based. The Sensory Garden will provide stimulation by way of plants and specialist equipment to engage one’s senses of smell, sight, touch, taste and hearing. It will be a place where children and adults with Learning Disabilities, Dementia, Alzheimer’s and other related sensory disorders can feel safe and comfortable in exploring their senses without feeling overwhelmed by them.
If any person, business or organisation is interested in assisting and/or making a donation please contact us by email or visit our website (see Contacts section lower down on this page).

Regular Activities
We run a Social Club (Nova Club) for adults and a Youth Club for young people with learning disabilities on alternate Wednesdays (7-9pm) at Burview Hall.
Weekly Get Up and Go sessions are run on Thursdays; a morning and an afternoon session for those adults with profound learning disabilities.
A Cinema Night is run once a month on a Saturday evening and a Family Fun afternoon is run one Sunday a month. This is open to families with a child with a learning disability and their siblings to enjoy the facilities of the hall.
About Elmbridge Mencap
Elmbridge Mencap is affiliated to Mencap but works independently on a local level for the benefit of people with learning disabilities and their parents/carers in the Elmbridge and surrounding areas. We are here to offer help and advice in a practical way and we hope enrich the lives of all people with learning disabilities.

Volunteers & Funding
Elmbridge Mencap is mainly run by volunteers who devote a lot of time to fundraising through organising Christmas fairs, jumble sales, attending fetes, table top sales and cinema nights. Seven part time members of staff are employed to assist with the booking of the hall, accounts, and club organisation. We do not receive any support/subsidies from Mencap or any other charity/government departments. We rely on income from hall lettings, fundraising activities, membership subscriptions and grant awards.
