Royal Aeronautical Society Weybridge Surrey Branch – 2019 Meetings & Lectures
March 2019 Lecture: Modern Aircrew Escape Systems
The lecture briefly explores the history and development of Martin-Baker ejection seats before focusing on the major technical challenges, the associated requirements and the solutions employed in aircrew escape systems in modern aircraft such as the F-35. The lecture includes a walk-through of the automated sequence of events which occur during ejection and recovery from typical escape scenarios. Attendees will gain an appreciation of how the seat system optimises the sequence according to the conditions encountered during ejection, and how the various sub-systems collaborate to achieve a successful escape. Martin-Baker Aircraft Company Limited is the world’s leading supplier of aircrew escape systems, having supplied 53% of the ejection seats currently in service globally, and having saved over 7500 aircrew lives, including more than 1000 UK aircrew lives, since the first life saved in 1949.

About The Speaker
Andrew studied Mechanical Engineering at University of Hertfordshire after which he worked at Astrium, Stevenage, in the mechanisms team. Here he worked on the Mars lander, Beagle 2, on everything from design calculations to building and testing the solar array and robotic arm mechanisms. He then moved to SSTL, structures team, working on multiple solar arrays and 6m long deployable booms. During his time with SSTL he’s broadened his capabilities to now include propulsion and electronics and electrical engineering. As Head of Payloads he is currently responsible for supporting the development of future payloads with new technology.
