SC Johnson Funds Family Pod At New Hospice

SC Johnson has donated over £100,000 to fund the construction and furnishing of a family ‘pod’ at Woking & Sam Beare Hospices’ new state-of-the-art 20 bedroom hospice, due to open in the Spring in Goldsworth Park, Woking.

Named the SC Johnson Family Room, the wood-clad curved structure extends out from the first floor of the hospice, sitting on diagonal steel legs which support and anchor it to the ground. The futuristic design was inspired by Woking author H.G. Wells’ novel War of the Worlds, giving a nod to local history in the design of the building. It will provide a relaxing area for families to use, including a kitchen, comfortable seating area, toy box and television. The pod has one fully glass wall, creating a light and calming atmosphere.

Interim CEO and Director of Nursing Jayne Cooper said: ‘SC Johnson’s incredibly generous support has ensured that our pod is fully furnished and ready to welcome patients’ families. It will be invaluable to have a place where they can go for a change of scene and to be able to make drinks and food. We understand that supporting a loved one at the end of their life can be stressful and tiring and this pod will provide much-needed peace and seclusion. I’d like to say a very heartfelt thank you to SC Johnson for their wonderful donation.’

The SC Johnson pod is one of two family areas in the charity’s hospice, with the other being situated inside the building. They are both on the same level as the patients’ en-suite bedrooms, so that relatives can have a break while also being immediately on hand if they are needed.

Woking & Sam Beare Weybridge Hospices

Woking & Sam Beare Hospice is a patient-centred charity that delivers specialist palliative care to adult patients of all ages who have life-limiting and terminal illnesses. We cover the North West Surrey region, providing free of charge holistic care and support services for patients, their families and carers. We care for over 1,400 patients both in our hospice and in their own homes (where over 70% of our care is delivered), enabling patient choice and the best quality of life.

We care for adults of all ages with a wide range of life limiting conditions such as cancer, heart disease, Motor Neurone Disease (MND), chronic pulmonary conditions, Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis (MS). We help patients to manage their symptoms, which are often complex and why they require the expertise of our Clinical Nurse Specialists and specialist doctors.

Our services enable us to offer our patients holistic care, which means we offer practical, emotional, social and spiritual support as well as managing their medical needs. We offer day care services where patients receive assessments, treatments and therapies, as well as emotional and spiritual support. We also deliver counselling for our patients and their families, including child bereavement services and school support programmes.

We are a charity, and while we receive some government funding, around 75% of what we deliver is funded through our charity shops and fundraising activities. We could not do this without the generosity of all of our supporters, volunteers and the local community.
