Film Synopsis

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread, his first movie outside of the US, is a gothic romance set in 1950s London. It explores the rigid world of haute couture and the English class system. The film centers around Reynolds Woodcock, a control freak and high end fashion designer who custom makes dresses for royalty and high society in 1950s London.

Helped by his sister, Cyril, with whom he has a co- dependent relationship, he is a handsome and dashing man about town who has a succession of live-in lovers who, are swiftly discarded once their usefulness is over.

However when he meets Alma, a waitress on one of his country visits, things change and she goes back to his country cottage to be used for measurements for a new dress.

She becomes his live-in girlfriend and fully integrates into his professional life even though his sister warns him that she is outstaying her welcome.

However she wants more from the relationship and the rest of the film is devoted to this.

Film Notes

The young Luxembourg actress, Vicky Krieps, while relatively unknown, plays Alma brilliantly. There are many references and similarities to Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca.

The film was nominated for six Academy Awards (Oscars): Best Picture, Director (Anderson), Actor in a Leading Role (Day-Lewis), Actress in a Supporting Role (Lesley Manville), Costume Design, and Original Score.
