Woking & Sam Beare Hospices has received a grant of £57,400 from Woking Council, to continue to support the charity’s Senior Community Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist post during 2017.

This senior community nurse leads the hospices’ community care team. The team provides care, advice and support to more than 1,400 patients at home each year, improving their quality of life and helping them to live independently for as long as possible.

Interim CEO and Director of Nursing Jayne Cooper said: ‘Many people don’t realise that 70 per cent of our work is in the community, in people’s own homes. We are very grateful to Woking Council for this grant as our community nurses are vital to hundreds of local people with specialist palliative care needs, and their carers.’

The hospices’ community team cares for people directly where they live, and help to relieve pain and the symptoms of illness, as well as providing practical help so that people can access statutory benefits and support. They are a key part of a holistic, patient-led approach which includes clinical care, therapeutic support, counselling, a 24-hour telephone support service, and spiritual care for those who request it.

Cllr Melanie Whitehand, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Grants to Voluntary and Community Organisations said: ‘As a council, we believe that it is very important that individuals can receive palliative care in their own homes and, if they choose to, die with dignity at home. This grant will help Woking & Sam Beare Hospices to continue to provide a flexible and responsive service to meet patients’ needs.’

The hospices have received a yearly grant from Woking Council for the same amount since 2012. These funds have previously supported the funding of Senior Clinical Nurse Specialist, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Palliative Care Consultant.
