What Is PAT Testing?

Portable appliance testing (commonly known as “PAT”, “PAT Inspection” or “PAT Testing”) is the name of a process in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand and Australia by which electrical appliances are routinely checked for safety.

The correct term for the whole process is “in-service inspection & testing of electrical equipment”.

What Are Periodic Inspections?

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (E.I.C.R.) previously known as a Periodic Inspection Report (P.I.R) is like a M.O.T for the mains power electrical installation and wiring of your property.

Why Should Periodic Inspections Be Carried Out?

All electrical installations deteriorate with age and use. They should therefore be inspected and tested at appropriate intervals to check whether they are in a satisfactory condition for continued service.

Such safety checks are commonly referred to as ‘periodic inspection and testing’.

PAT Testing Report

A periodic Inspection will:

  • Reveal if any circuits or equipment are being overloaded
  • Reveal any poor electrical work
  • Find any potential electrical shock risks and fire hazards in the installation
  • Highlight any lack of earthing or bonding
  • Determine the extent of any wear and tear and damage
  • Assess the adequacy and labelling of notices
  • Determine how changes in use of the premises could lead to deficiencies in the electrical installation
How Often Should Periodic Electrical Inspections Be Carried Out?

The time intervals between the recommended dates of periodic inspections require careful considerations.

The date for the first periodic inspection and test is required to be considered and recommended by the installation designer.

The date of each subsequent periodic inspection is required to be considered and recommended as part of carrying out a periodic inspection and test, by the person undertaking that particular inspection and test.

What Is The Process Of Periodic Inspections?
    • Do a visual inspection of the installation.
    • Test the Continuity of (cpc) & Earth conductors.
    • Test the Continuity of the ring circuits.
    • Test for correct Polarity.
    • Test the Insulation resistance of conductors.
    • Test the Earth loop impedance to determine the quality of your earthing.
    • Testing of RCDs to check that they do trip at the correct time and current rating.
    • Test Functional switching and Isolation, to insure the switches actually switch the live conductor and not the Neutral.
