UltraFan®- Bringing the next generation of gas turbine engine technology to life

The consistent drive for improved fuel burn in the civil aerospace Powerplant domain has driven gas turbine engine technology development for at least the last 40 years and will continue to do so far into the future.

After 5 evolutions of the hugely successful Trent engine type, Rolls-Royce has identified the need for a step change in engine architecture to meet the demands of the next decade on civil large engines, giving rise to the UltraFan® family concept.

This lecture will explore the need for change in large civil gas turbine design and explain the scope of change that Rolls-Royce is pursuing. The planned technology proving programme will be outlined, highlighting not only the key technologies and route to de-risking of them, but also the basics of the programme construct and team behaviours that apply to this hugely complex product development activity.
