Refill Weybridge – Free Tap Water To Cut Back On Single-Use Plastics
About
Refill Weybridge
Refill is a nationwide scheme providing a network of points offering the public free tap water in the UK. The network comprises high street retailers, cafes, restaurants, other businesses, museums, and local authorities. The idea for Refill came from Natalie Fee, who set up the community interest company City to Sea in order to launch Refill in Bristol in 2015. City to Sea continues to organise it along with sponsor Water UK.
The scheme aims to prevent waste created by single-use plastic water bottles, as well as increasing the availability of quality drinking water. Recently, 19th June was celebrated as the national Refill Day all across the country to spread awareness about this campaign and stop the use of single Use Plastics in our day to day life.
Charu Sood, the Local Champion for Weybridge, was introduced to Refill Scheme by Tricia Bland, local champion for Thames Ditton, and was inspired by the message and the initiative.
There are around one million plastic bottles bought per minute around the world and the harm caused by the plastics to our planet is irreversible. This use of plastic is predicted to increase by 20 percent by 2021 and she sees this community based initiative as a first step in the war on plastic.
After signing up as a Local Champion for Refill Weybridge in March 2019, she started to sign up the local businesses as refill stations. To date, she has successfully signed up more than 40 businesses as refill stations in Weybridge.
She has been highly active in promoting this initiative locally by visiting businesses in the Weybridge, spreading local awareness amongst residents through running a Stall in the Weybridge Cake Off event, visiting Oatlands Primary school and interacting with the children and also sharing her experiences on Woking and Brooklands radio.

You can connect to this scheme by downloading the free Refill app and look for the refill stations around you. Today there are more than 17,000 refill stations all across the UK. These businesses are easily identifiable by a Bright Blue sticker with the message ”free tap here” prominently displayed on their windows/ doors. If you can’t find one around you then sign up as a champion and bring this scheme to your local area.
You will find more info about becoming a local Champion on www.refill.org.uk

Free Tap Water Provided By Participating Venues
Anyone can download the free app to find Refill Stations near them where they can refill on the go.
Participating cafés, bars, restaurants, banks, galleries, museums and other businesses simply sign up to the app and put a sticker in their window, alerting passers-by that they’re welcome to come on in and fill up their bottle.
There are now thousands of Refill Stations on the app in the UK alone – including railway stations, supermarkets, airports and high street chains.

Encouraging The Use Of Refill
We now have many shops and other venues in Weybridge offering free tap water refills, but to make a big difference, it is important for members of the public to get into the habit of taking refillable bottles when they go out.
Refill Weybridge Champion Charu Sood has visited Oatlands School to talk about Refill. The kids were very interested and enthusiastic.
