The Closest Premier League Clubs to Weybridge

If you live in Weybridge and fancy watching top-flight football without a long trek across the country, you are better placed than most. The town sits in a pocket of Surrey that puts three Premier League grounds within comfortable reach, all of them clustered in west and south-west London rather than scattered miles away. The area’s strong sporting culture also creates opportunities for people exploring side hustle ideas, whether that’s creating local football travel guides, running matchday blogs, or sharing recommendations on the best routes, pubs and places to visit around nearby stadiums.

The closest of the lot are Brentford, Fulham and Chelsea. Each one is an easy run up the A3 or a straightforward train journey from Weybridge station, which means you can be in your seat well before kick-off and still home at a reasonable hour. For anyone weighing up a season ticket, the odd matchday outing or simply a first taste of live Premier League football, these are the three names worth knowing.

Brentford

  • Distance: around 13 miles
  • Drive time: roughly 25 to 30 minutes via the A316
  • Public transport: about 45 to 50 minutes. Take a South Western Railway service from Weybridge to Vauxhall or Clapham Junction, then change onto another South Western Railway service out to Brentford or Syon Lane

Brentford is the nearest Premier League club to Weybridge, and the journey could hardly be simpler. Stick to the A316 and you will be parked up near the ground in well under half an hour outside of rush hour, which makes the Bees a realistic option even on a work night.

Home games are played at the Gtech Community Stadium, the tidy 17,000-seater the club moved into in 2020 after nearly a century at Griffin Park. It is a compact, modern ground with steep stands that keep the noise in, and the atmosphere on a good day belies the relatively small capacity.

The trophy cabinet tells the story of a club that spent most of its history in the lower divisions before its recent rise. Brentford are champions of the English second tier on one occasion, the third tier once more, and the fourth tier three times over. Promotion to the Premier League in 2021 was the club’s first taste of the top flight since the 1940s, and they have held their own ever since.

Fulham

  • Distance: around 15 miles
  • Drive time: roughly 35 minutes via the A3
  • Public transport: about 45 to 50 minutes. Take the South Western Railway train from Weybridge to Wimbledon, then switch to the District line to Putney Bridge or Fulham Broadway

A couple of miles further on from Brentford sits Fulham, and the trip is just as manageable. The A3 carries you most of the way by car, while the train and Tube combination via Wimbledon gets you there in well under an hour. Putney Bridge leaves you with a short walk along the river to the ground, which is a pleasant way to arrive on a dry afternoon.

That ground is Craven Cottage, and it is one of the real treats of English football. Sat right on the banks of the Thames, it is the oldest professional football ground in London still in use, and the recently rebuilt Riverside Stand has smartened the place up without stripping away its old-fashioned charm. The famous cottage in the corner of the pitch remains, as does the sense that you are watching football somewhere with a bit of soul to it.

Fulham’s honours reflect a club that has spent plenty of time bouncing between the divisions. They are three-time champions of the English second tier, twice champions of the third, and they lifted the Intertoto Cup in 2002, which opened the door to European football. These days they look settled in the Premier League, and a visit to the Cottage is well worth the trip from Weybridge.

Chelsea

  • Distance: around 18 miles
  • Drive time: roughly 36 minutes via the M25 and M4
  • Public transport: about 45 minutes. Take the train to Wimbledon, then the District line to Fulham Broadway

The third and final club on the list is also the biggest name. Chelsea are a little further out than their two neighbours, but only just, and the journey is no harder. By car the M25 and M4 do the heavy lifting, while the train to Wimbledon followed by a short hop on the District line drops you almost at the turnstiles. Fulham Broadway station is barely a few minutes’ walk from the ground.

Stamford Bridge has been Chelsea’s home since the club was founded in 1905, and it sits in the well-heeled streets of south-west London. It holds a little over 40,000, so the matchday buzz around the surrounding pubs and the Fulham Road is on a different scale to anything you will find at Brentford or Fulham.

The honours are where Chelsea really pull away from the pack. They have won the league title six times and the FA Cup on eight occasions, alongside five League Cups. In Europe the cabinet is genuinely stacked, with two Champions League triumphs, two Europa League titles, two Cup Winners’ Cups and, more recently, the Conference League. Add a couple of FIFA Club World Cups and a clutch of European Super Cups and the picture is complete: this is one of the most decorated clubs in the English game, right on Weybridge’s doorstep.

Beyond the Premier League

Top-flight football is not the only option within easy reach of Weybridge. Drop down the divisions and the choice opens up considerably. Queens Park Rangers play their Championship football at Loftus Road in Shepherd’s Bush, while AFC Wimbledon are another short trip away in south-west London. Closer still is Woking FC, just down the road in neighbouring Woking, who offer a proper taste of non-league football at a fraction of the price. For something on the doorstep, local side Walton and Hersham are practically around the corner. There really is football for every budget here.
