Canines On The Common – Sponsored Dog Walk For Woking & Sam Beare Hospices

Woking & Sam Beare Hospices is holding a weekend for dog-lovers on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 July with ‘Canines on the Common’, a 3k sponsored dog walk and fun day at Heather Farm by Horsell Common (please note that the dog-walking paths are not fully ‘enclosed’ as dogs can still access the river).

From 10.30am to 4pm on both days, dogs are invited to drop in at any time and bring their two-legged friends along to enjoy a doggy treasure hunt as they travel the specially-created dog-walking paths by the dog-friendly Water’s Edge café.

Horsell Common Preservation Society
Supported by the Horsell Common Preservation Society (which owns and manages Heather Farm), Heathland Hounds and the Thames Heath Partnership Wardens, the event will also help dog owner’s access advice and tips.

There will be sessions on grooming, canine health and animal behaviour, as well as an agility demonstrations and shows, animal photography, refreshments, tombola, ‘guess the canine cake’, balloon modelling, kids’ art competition and lots of fun activities for all the family.

Dogs can enter in advance online at wsbhospices.co.uk or simply register on the day for £5, with a target to raise £20 sponsorship per dog towards the £8.6million the hospice needs to raise each year to help some 1,400 people across North West Surrey, and their families and carers.

Helping the hospice – whether on four legs or two – has got to be something to wag your tail about!

Local individuals and businesses working with dogs are invited to support the event by running a stall or an activity, and we are looking for donations for our doggy-themed tombola (gifts for both dogs and people!).

If you think you could help to support the hospice’s free end-of-life care through Canines on the Common please contact the Events Team on fundraising@wsbhospices.co.uk or call 01483 881 752. Register for the event online today at wsbhospices.co.uk.

Woking & Sam Beare Hospices is a patient-centred charity that delivers specialist palliative care to adult patients of all ages who have life-limiting and terminal illnesses. We cover the North West Surrey region, providing free of charge holistic care and support services for patients, their families and carers. Each year we care for over 2000 patients, their families and carers both in our hospice and their own homes (where over 70% of our care is delivered) enabling patient choice and the best quality of life.

We care for adults of all ages with a wide range of life limiting conditions such as cancer, heart disease, Motor Neurone Disease (MND), chronic pulmonary conditions, Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis (MS). We help patients to manage their symptoms, which are often complex and why they require the expertise of our Clinical Nurse Specialists and specialist doctors.

Our services enable us to offer our patients holistic care, which means we offer practical, emotional, social and spiritual support as well as managing their medical needs. We offer day care services where patients receive assessments, treatments and therapies, as well as emotional and spiritual support. We also deliver counselling for our patients and their families, including child bereavement services and school support programmes.

We are a charity, and while we receive some government funding, around 75% of what we deliver is funded through our charity shops and fundraising activities. We could not do this without the generosity of all of our supporters, volunteers and the local community.
