Weybridge In Bloom – 2019 At A Glance
A Successful First Year
Team WiB would like to extend a warm welcome to our new members.
Looking back on the year 2019, we started the year with a handful of volunteers and are now a community of over 100 plus members from all across Weybridge and neighbouring areas.
As we come to the end of 2019, on behalf of team WiB, I send you Seasons Greeting and a wish you a very Happy New Year 2020.
We look forward to continue and build on our successes from 2019.
We will be sharing the details of our plans for 2020 early in the New Year on www.weybridgeinbloom.org.uk which is a Community website on All About Weybridge.
WiB was formally launched on 2nd March 2019. We held our first bulb-planting event on 25th Nov 2018 and then over the next 12 months in 2019, we have made good strides (details below) in making Weybridge a more greener and brighter place to live, work and do business. We have been busy through the year organising and running various events, drives and competitions that have kept the local Weybridge involved with WiB.
Thank you from the WiB Executive team:
· Founder/Chair – Charu Sood
· Vice Chair – Ian Donaldson
· Treasurer – Mike O’ Sullivan
· Communications – Hilary Butler
· Gardening Team Leads – Anna Gibbons and Diane Ewart
2019 at a Glance:
We have had three bulb planting events till date and have covered quite a lot of Weybridge. Morrison being our first on the list. This year we have planted at the quadrant and Oatlands recreation ground along with other places like Thames Street, Foxholes and Churchfields recreation ground.
The wildflower bedding was done by the volunteers and their children as well as members of WiB “The wildflower meadow display of Poppy, Cornflower, Corn Cockle and Corn Marigold became a key area to attract the bees”.
Organised to celebrate national tree planting day on the 30th November in partnership with EBC.
Planted 5 Birch trees along with 5 different local community groups – My son’s planet, Cloth Club Weybridge, Elmbridge Environment Concern Group and Molesey Cloth Exchange.
Design A Flowerbed Competition
was organised in partnership with Elmbridge borough council and the winning design of Aryan Patel, student of St George’s junior school was planted in Churchfields recreation ground.
Children’s (under 10’s) Sunflower Competition
Was organised by The WAHGA (Weybridge Allotment Holders’ and Gardeners’ Association) in partnership with WiB to encourage younger generation.
The response was tremendous and we had joint winners Alice O’Neil and Emily Oreto friends and schoolmates from St James School.
This was open to all Weybridge non-retail and retail businesses. We were pleased to receive 15 entries to the competition. The Winner for the competition was “Collections Hair Club”, Queens road.
The competition was run in partnership with
· The Arts Society Weybridge
· Weybridge Society
· Weybridge Town Business Group
· All about Weybridge (Media partner)
Litter Picking Events
We all met at the Weybridge station car park and after a short briefing we all walked and started collecting litter, cigarette butts, empty crisp packet. The high visibility jackets and litter picking sticks were provided by EBC. We were shocked to see the amount of fly tipping taking place in open spaces. The local residents appreciated the drive and we got a good response from all involved.
Weybridge Christmas Fayre
She along with Bryn (a student of Heathside School) had manned the stall and interacted with the visitors of the stall, promoted our brand and encouraged more people to sign up with WiB.
