Strength & Conditioning Class

The aim is that by keeping it flowing, with upbeat music playing, it helps give a focus to those with overactive minds.
Yoga is increasing in popularity, as a main element is it’s strength and conditioning, which is fantastic for getting fit and it’s available to all levels! We all have strengths and challenges, therefore various options are offered to enable you to tailor the class to your own level, working as strong, or as lightly as YOU choose too!
A lighthearted approach encourages students to relax, enabling them to listen to their own bodies without intimidation, because you most definitely won’t find the ‘yoga police’ in this class as the focus is all about celebrating what you can do (not what you cant), for with practice and patience the rest will come, so you are encouraged to work within your own parameters of stretch and strength (no strain or pain) therefore giving you the control!
Verbal adjustments are used, again to give you the control to deepen the pose to your own ability, so rest assured you will never be forced into a pose because only when the body is ready, will it arrive!

  We offer tailor made yoga lessons at a time convenient to you.  We can address your specific needs, including postural analysis and correction alignment.

Yoga is the ONLY system that looks at the body as a WHOLE.
  When there are areas of tightness in the body it causes blockages, energy (oxygen / nutrients / hormones etc) is restricted creating a malfunction.

Yoga brings balance back to the body enabling it to work at its most effective.

  Like anything in life it is all about balance, when our lives are in balance everything is working well and going smoothly but when we take on too much, every thing falls apart and this is our warning sign that something needs to change.
  It's the same with the body, when the body is in balance it works efficiently but when it is out of balance things start to go wrong, we get ill, the body shuts down because it wants to heal itself. But what do we do? - we 'pop pills' to enable us to 'carry on'.
  We don't listen to the body & wonder why our immune system is 'shot to pieces'. We pick up bug after bug and just don't seem able to shrug it off. We've lost the ability to listen to our bodies. Yoga brings balance back to the body enabling it to work at its most effective.

Improve your flexibility

  If the body is constantly hunching over a computer or hands in a 'keyboard' position, over a period of time the body conserves energy and 'sets' at these positions, yoga brings the body into balance by counter posing this shortening of muscles.
  Also stress initiates muscular contractions in the large muscle groups activated by the 'fight or flight' response of the sympathetic nervous system. When the stress response is activated often, chronic contraction can result in these areas which include the shoulder, lower back and legs.
  Yoga releases these areas physically (through stretching & psychologically (through reducing the stress response) and therefore facilitates overall health in the muscular system.
  As the muscles relax, posture comes back into alignment and allows for maximum energy efficiency since it takes a lot of energy to hold the muscles and body in a contracted, imbalanced state.

  Some nerves/adrenaline are helpful but when you are feeling out of control and the nerves are taking over, yoga gives you tools for your 'toolbox' helping you to bring your nerves under control when, and if, you choose to.
  In this modern day we are so used to stress and the over use of the sympathetic nervous system that we don't know how to recognise stress.
  When the body is operating on a 'red alert status' all of the time our emotional state is out of balance as is the endocrine system (which effects our glands which secretes hormones, adrenaline, insulin, digestive juices - which when out of balance manifests itself as stomach ulcers).

Yoga For Sports

The focus here is all about ‘prehab’ not ‘rehab’. Using yoga mainly for; strength and conditioning, increased focus and stamina.
 

Yoga Junky Focuses On:

Core Strength

  Because without it there is no power in that kick/throw/club/racquet. It all comes from the core.

Hamstrings

  To bring strength and flexibility, preventing injury and building power and length. This increases the stride, stretching out that extra, giving it that little bit more which could make all the difference to your game.

Psoas and Performs

  Bringing particular focus to these muscles because when they are tight they are a major contributor to most back pain (both originate in the lower back and form one tendon attaching to the back of the femur, not just causing back pain but causing some restriction in striding or kicking).

Feet and Ankles

  Focusing on the muscles, joints & tendons in the feet and ankles, lengthening & strengthening preventing injury & creating mobility for 'darting' around the pitch/court.

Increasing Stamina

  Yoga offers skills to build physical and emotional endurance, increasing stamina avoiding exhaustion. One way yoga aids this is by getting the 'energy' moving, using techniques to increase and regulate the supply of oxygen/glucose to the muscles to keep up with the physical demand.

A body out of alignment causes injuries, illness & sub-optimal performance

  When the physical or emotional body is out of alignment/harmony it causes areas of 'slumping', which produces tension in the muscles, the muscles then press onto the bones (which are then vulnerable to injury and osteo-arthritis because the lubrication cannot get through to joints).
  Oxygen and nutrients can't get through to feed muscles, so the muscles tire easily (most injuries occur because of muscle fatigue). They also contract causing tightness particularly in the shoulders, lower back and legs.
  The brain is also starved of oxygen which manifests itself in tiredness, fatigue and depression. This creates tightness in the chest, causing shallow breathing (which leads to not enough oxygen in blood stream, inducing less efficient blood-oxygen exchange. This in turn can lead to a lot of physical problems, the body's organs cannot function properly).
  So you see it is a domino effect, when one area of the body malfunctions it has a knock-on effect for the whole body.
  When injuries keep occurring it is the body talking to us, we have just lost the ability to listen to our bodies, because where pain manifests itself is not necessarily where it has originated from. For instance, infection in the kidneys can manifest its as back pain.
  Yoga strengthens not just the exterior body but also works on the internal body. Also, yoga releases the muscles not only through the stretching but psychologically by reducing the stress response of the sympathetic nervous system.
  So you see the body HAS to be looked at as a WHOLE and yoga is the ONLY system which offers this.
  Just imagine if yoga could be taken into your sport - I wonder how different the outcome would be.
