Why I Volunteer – Karen Stow – Elmbridge Healthy Walks

My favourite areas to walk are Esher Commons, Whiteley Village, towpaths and Bushy and Richmond Parks. I love to pick up or look up bits of information about my routes, share them with my walkers. The first walks Elmbridge put on were mainly led by the Countryside team who knew lots about the areas we were walking in, making them interesting as well as healthy. The Elmbridge Volunteer Centre can help you to start making a difference

Before you start to volunteer it is important to take time to think about exactly what it is you want to do, how much time you want to commit and how often you can do it.

We can assist you through this process by either meeting you for a chat, discussing it over the phone or if it’s easier via email.

Once we’ve helped you to narrow down your choices we can then put you in touch suitable organisations.

Some of the ways you can help to make a difference

  • caring for animals and wildlife
  • spending time mentoring and befriending a vulnerable person
  • working outdoors to improve the environment
  • helping on local community projects
  • becoming a school or college governor
  • joining an organisation as a chairman, treasurer, trustee or committee member
  • setting up a volunteer scheme at your workplace
