Get Involved in Your Local Community

Volunteer to Help Make a Real Difference
Many people may be interested in volunteering, but could feel concerned that their experience and skills may not be suitable or that the time commitment would be too high.
With a variety of roles and types of organisations looking for help there really is something suitable for everybody. Volunteer Centre Elmbridge is actively seeking volunteers for over 400 roles in local organisations and can help people who would like to volunteer identify roles that match their skills, interests and availability.

Why volunteer?
By giving your time you will not only help local charities and community groups improve lives but also benefit yourself. Many people who volunteer gain great satisfaction by making a positive contribution to society. Volunteering can also be a great way to build confidence, provide routine into your week, as well as gaining new experience and meeting new people.

Scott Fielding became a Trustee for Home-Start, who support parents build better lives for their families. Being new to the area he decided to use the Volunteer Centre to find out how to get involved in the local community.
“When I became aware that Home-Start had available positions I applied immediately as Home-Start had been very helpful to my wife when we first moved to the area.
I would definitely recommend volunteering - times are tough at the moment and more so for the charitable sector than anywhere else. They face lower grants, fundraising is harder as people have lower disposable incomes and their clients need more help now than ever.
Volunteering in your local community allows you to help your neighbours by giving some time, or knowledge, or just being there to listen when someone needs to talk. Volunteers can make a huge difference to people lives with even a small gesture and helping others is an incredibly rewarding feeling that you might not get with your day job. “

I have additional needs, can I still volunteer?
Yes! The Volunteer Centre also runs a specific programme called ASPIRE which is a project designed to help and support anyone who faces challenges in their life into voluntary roles, whatever the reason.

“I have become happier in my life and improved my self confidence. Managing to get out of the house on a more frequent basis, helping to overcome agoraphobia.”

“The morning of starting my volunteering role, I was sick with nerves and had concerns that I would not be able to cope or be able to work independently. However during my time at the Fire Station, I now know I can do this and my confidence has improved over this time.
I am grateful for the friendly and kind environment and the positive feedback I received when I had done a good job.”

The Volunteer Centre can help you to start making a difference
Before you start to volunteer it is important to take time to think about exactly what it is you want to do, how much time you want to commit and how often you can do it.
We can assist you through this process by either meeting you for a chat, discussing it over the phone or if it’s easier via email.
Once we’ve helped you to narrow down your choices we can then put you in touch suitable organisations.

Some of the ways you can help to make a difference
  caring for animals and wildlife
spending time mentoring and befriending a vulnerable person
working outdoors to improve the environment
helping on local community projects
becoming a school or college governor
joining an organisation as a chairman, treasurer, trustee or committee member
setting up a volunteer scheme at your workplace

Take your next step into volunteering
