This painting captures the dramatic events of the morning of August 5th 1781 when Dutch and English squadrons encountered each other in their only engagement in the American War of Independence. The Dutch had been supplying the Americans in support of their war effort, prompting the British to declare war in December 1780. Each side saw the battle as an opportunity to gain superiority at sea, although after three hours fighting, both sides withdrew. Casualties on both sides were high, considering the number of ships involved. (Fewer casualties were suffered, for example, in the Battle of the Chesapeake, fought a month later between fleets more than twice as large.) The British claimed 104 killed and 339 wounded, while the Dutch claimed 142 killed and 403 wounded.

Of the British ships involved in the action, HMS Berwick (on the extreme left of the painting) had the most interesting history, also fighting the French at the Battle of Ushant in 1778, before being captured in the French Revolutionary Wars in 1795 and then used by the French at Trafalger before being briefly recaptured by the British prior to sinking shortly thereafter in the storm that followed the battle.

Although the battle has little impact on the war itself, the British could claim a strategic victory, as the Dutch fleet never again went to sea during the war. Luny painted several other scenes of the battle, one of which is owned by the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.

Thomas Luny - Artist's Biography

Thomas Luny was a British marine painter. He was trained by the marine painter Francis Holman and continued working with him in London until the early 1780s. In 1778 he started exhibiting at the Society of Artists and between 1780 and 1837 he exhibited 28 paintings at the Royal Academy. At the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars in 1793 he volunteered to join the Navy. After his retirement from the Navy he settled in Teignmouth in Devon, still maintaining a studio in London.

Luny was a prolific painter, and despite severe arthritis in his hands, he was able to have a retrospective exhibition in Bond Street with 130 of his works on display.

Examples of the artist's work can be found in many Museums around the world, including the National Maritime Museum, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth and the Peabody Museum of Sail, Salem, Massachusetts.
