Zoe Rider ARAD – Director

Zoe first started dancing at the age of 2 and subsequently won a place at the English National Ballet School. She performed with the Bolshoi Ballet whilst they were on tour in London and also performed in front of the late Lady Diana.

On becoming a professional ballerina, Zoe danced at the prestigious Deutsche Oper Ballet in Berlin for 7 years. Once back in the UK, she danced with the Northern Ballet Theatre.

Zoe retired from the stage to have her 2 children and in 2008, motherhood combined with her career in ballet led to a new and exciting career with Totsdance. Nine years on, she is very proud of how Totsdance has developed over the years. It has grown from strength to strength and now also includes Ballet Classes, Workshops and Private Parties.

Totsdance was first devised in 2005 by Sarah Dekker, former Head of Education at the Rambert Dance Company.

Claire Horne - Totsdance Teacher

Claire’s earliest childhood memory is of dancing. She was deeply inspired by childhood trips to watch the Ballet at Christmas with her family, and her passion has continued to this day. Throughout her life, Claire has always danced for pleasure. She has taken classes in many dance styles, varying from Ballet to Swing. Claire’s passion for the Performing Arts led her to train in Acting, at The Academy Drama School (Whitechapel) and The City Lit (Covent Garden).

In addition to Acting, her theatre training included elements of dance and physical theatre. As well as teaching Totsdance classes, Claire has devised a programme of ‘Active Learning’. Letter and number formation, phonics, spellings and numeracy are brought to life through movement; allowing children to engage with their learning in a fun, multi sensory way.

Claire’s background in Theatre, natural dance ability and years of experience working with Children as a professional Nanny give her an ideal grounding for teaching our Totsdance classes.

“I have been lucky enough to have attended Totsdance for over three and a half years (11 terms) with my three children (two girls and one boy).

Every lesson is engaging, well thought out and exciting for the children and parents alike. The variety of themes, music and dances ensures there is something for everyone. We have also had the pleasure of being taught by both Claire and Zoe. They both involve and encourage every child each lesson, and come up with imaginative ways for them to learn and develop skills. Not only do they learn the skills you would expect from a dance class such as balance, coordination and musicality but also listening, taking turns, following instructions and sharing.

I have already signed up for next term and recommend this class to all my friends and family. Not only is it a fun way to spend time with your child(ren) but it is a wonderful way to meet other parents and children. Thank you for being such a huge amazing part of my children’s lives. They really would not be the same children if it hadn’t been for you!”

Natasha

“We love the themes at Totsdance, as well as the different genres of music and dance! It is all so very well thought out and the rapport Zoe builds with each individual child is fantastic. Totsballet is informal and pitched perfectly. Zoe always keeps control and the classes have a good pace. I love how it introduces all the correct language and steps whilst making it fun and not at all pressurised.”

Kelly

“Thank you so much to Zoe and Claire who hosted my daughter’s party yesterday. The attention to detail in terms of the theme was brilliant and the little party guests were in awe! Exceeded my expectations in every way-great pace and brilliant props too! The look on my daughter’s face was priceless! Would highly recommend. Thanks ever so much for making Freya’s day so special!”

“My little girl loves her dance lessons with Zoe. There are always the same warm up routines each week to start with which she loves doing at home and then different themes each week based on items in the Story Basket. She loves it and to be honest so do I! It’s half an hour with no phones/chores/distractions for us to just have fun together. Highly recommended.”

“Fred has loved his introduction to dancing with Totsdance. Zoe’s classes are fun, action packed and creative with some lovely balance, encouraging self expression, exploring movement and learning simple routines week after week. Now Fred is 3 he loves the structure of the ballet class.

Zoe relates to the children wonderfully, works with their energy and presents the formal discipline of ballet in such a fun and creative way that it holds the children’s attention and shares her obvious enthusiasm for dance. It’s a joy to watch the classes!”
