Ewbank Clarke Gammon Wellers are
Surrey's Premier Antique and Fine Art Auction Rooms. We
are Members of the Society of Fine Art Auctioneers and
Valuers and Chris Ewbank is also a Chartered Arts and
Antiques Surveyor. We hold regular Antiques and Fine Art
Auctions and provide valuations for sale, probate and
insurance.
We hold 4 Antique and Fine Art
auction sales
each year and 15 sales of Victorian and later
furnishings.
We hold quarterly Antique and Fine Art auctions
including a complete range of antiques and collector's
items. We have benefitted from the trend in recent years
for more important items to be sold outside London,
where the costs of sale have rocketed. Catalogues are
produced and circulated to prospective purchasers by
post and E-mail and full details, including digital
illustrations, are included on the auctioneer's website and on the
two other major UK auction web sites. Buyers are
attracted from all over the world.
Auction Times & Viewings
All auctions are normally
held on a Wednesday commencing at 10.30, with
public viewing on the previous Monday from 10am-5pm and Tuesday from 10am-8pm.
We are not open for viewings on Bank Holiday Mondays.
Dates are published annually. The calendar,
from the
auctioneer's website is shown below, and is
not normally changed, but buyers are always
advised to check before making a long journey.
We hope that you will come
to a sale; buying at auction can be rewarding
and fun and many become addicted to the
excitement of the auction sale.

Buying
- Can Anyone Attend View Or Bid At Auctions?
Yes, the auctions are public events;
you have no obligation to buy and can come along just to
view if you wish. If you decide to bid in the sale room
you will have to go through a simple registration
process and will be issued with your buyer's number. You
can register to place commision bids on the ECGW
website. Once you have registered your registration will
cover you for buying at future sales.
When I
Buy A Lot Are There Any Charges Other Than The Hammer
Price?
Yes all major auctioneers levy a
Buyer's Premium on the hammer price and ours including
VAT is 23.0% (20% + VAT). You will have to pay for
transport if you cannot take the item away yourself, and
we can put you in touch with carriers if you want a
quote or with shippers, if appropriate.
We hold quarterly Antique and Fine
Art auctions at the Burnt Common Auction Rooms and
regular sales of Edwardian and later furnishings every
two or three weeks. We are well known in Surrey because
we have been in business as Ewbank Auctioneers since
1990, occupying prominent high profile premises in
probably the best location in the South of England,
close to the A3 and M25. Our roots as Clarke Gammon and
Wellers provide a provenance of well over 100 years of
auctions in Surrey. The present auction rooms are 4
miles from Guildford and the same distance from Woking
main line station (London Waterloo 25 minutes).
The building has recently been
refurbished with additional floor space being created by
a new mezzanine floor. The new modern interior provides
over 3000 sq feet on the ground floor and is an intimate
and sympathetic setting for the display of antiques and
fine art.
Chris Ewbank heads our probate
department which deals with probate valuations and
sales. In addition we advise executors on security and
provide safe-keeping facilities for valuable items.
Clients usually come to us because we have acted for
them before or we have been recommended by friends or
professional advisers.
Commission is charged to sellers calculated per lot, as
follows:
15% up to £1,000 - 10%
thereafter
Entry charge on each lot
(sold or unsold) £5
Loss and damage warranty
1.5%
All the above are subject
to VAT at current rates. We may offer special rates for
valuable individual items or collections.

We prepare detailed insurance
schedules to enable clients to ensure that they are
maintaining adequate insurance cover for their antiques,
fine art and collections. These schedules can be
backed up with digital images.
We have access to specialist advice
including Oil paintings and Water-colours, Silver,
Jewellery, Oriental Works of Art, Antique Furniture and
Ceramics.
We specialise in providing a
valuation service for executors, including detailed
discussions on valuations, security, family division and
sale by auction.
Valuable items can be removed to our
premises for safekeeping. It is important for executors
to be able to show that they have used due diligence in
making returns to the Capital Taxes Office.
The basis of valuations is an
assessment of market value and as auctioneers who are
constantly in the market place we are ideally equipped
to carry out probate valuations.
