Sir Alfred John Munnings -
Biography
|
|
Sir Alfred
Munnings was one of England’s finest painters of
horses and hunting scenes. Born in Mendham, Suffolk
, his artistic talent was recognised even before he
started school. From 1893 to 1898 he was an
apprentice of Page Brothers, a firm of lithographers
in Norwich, where he worked during the day as a
poster artist and attended Norwich Art School in the
evening. Examples of his posters can be seen in the
studio at Castle House. |
|
During that
time he came to the attention of John Shaw Tomkins,
a director of Caley’s Chocolates, who greatly
encouraged him and became his first patron. |
|
In 1898,
still working at Page Brothers, Munnings had his
first painting accepted and hung at the Royal
Academy , which was to be the first of his 230
pictures hung in the Royal Academy . |
|
Apart from
time studying at Julian’s Atelier in Paris where he
was introduced to race courses, a theme for which he
became famous for. After his return to he lived and
worked in Mendham, painting horses and scenes of
country life. In 1908 he joined the famous Newlyn
School of artists in Cornwall , to become an
important member. He established himself at Lamorna
and it was there that he became friendly with Harold
and Laura Knight. |
|
Despite of
having lost the sight of his right eye in an
accident, Munnings enlisted in the Army, when World
War One broke out in 1914. He became an army horse
trainer near Reading and was later sent to as an
official war artist, attached to the Canadian
Cavalry Brigade. |
|
The end of
the war was a major turning point in his career and
his life. He painted his first race horse, the Grand
National .. |
|
Other
paintings by Sir Alfred Munnings in the Nov
2007 Willow Gallery collection include "In Dappled
Sunlight " |
