Edward Seago -
Biography
|
|
Edward
Seago was a British landscape painter. He studied at
the Royal Drawing Society, winning an award at the
early age of 14. He successfully exhibited his
paintings in London at the Royal Academy, the Royal
Water-colour Society, the Royal Society of British
Artists in Suffolk Street and the Royal Institute of
Oil Painters. He also enjoyed success at the Paris
Salon, Glasgow, New York, Toronto, Montreal, Los
Angeles, Oslo and Brussels. He was a member of the
Royal Society of British Artists from 1946, and of
the Royal Watercolour Society in Edinburgh from
1959. |
|
During the
Second World War Seago served with the Royal
Engineers and was invited by Field-Marshall Lord
Alexander to record the war campaign in Italy. It
was here that he met George VI, Winston Churchill
and Harold Macmillan who later became his patrons.
His campaign paintings were exhibited at Colnaghi’s
in London in 1945 and their success resulted in an
annual show at the gallery until 1967. Seago
continued to travel extensively. He accompanied HRH
the Duke of Edinburgh on Royal tours, showing his
paintings later at St James’ Palace. |
|
Edward
Seago was involved in the publication of many books
throughout his career. In 1934 he published a book
entitled Sons of Sawdus about circus life in the
west of Ireland. He also published Peace in War
(1943), High Endeavour (1944), With the Allied
Armies in Italy (1945) and his autobiography A
Canvas to Cover (1947). In 1936 some 42 of his
paintings were used to accompany John Masefield’s
collection of poems entitled, The Country Scene and
he worked with Masefield again on Tribute to Ballet
in 1937 and a Generation Risen (1942). |
