John William Godward - Artist's Biography
|
|
Born in London, John William
Godward, a classical genre painter, initially
trained as an architect under the supervision of
William Hoff Wonter. However his artistic ability
was quickly recognised and Godward was given much
encouragement. In the early 1880s he attended St
John’s Wood Art School and Clapham School of Art. He
exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1887 through to
1905 and in 1889 he became a member of the Royal
Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street.
His international reputation began to flourish and
in 1899 Godward exhibited at the Paris Salon. He was
awarded a gold medal at the International Exhibition
in Rome in 1913. After numerous visits to Italy, in
1911 he decided to stay, taking up residence in
Villa Stohl-Fern on the Monti Parioli near the Villa
Borghese. He eventually returned to London in 1921.
John William Godward is now recognised as one of
the finest classical genre painters of his period
and will always be appreciated for his high-quality
paintings of Graeco-Roman women set in luxurious
surroundings. |
