Biography
|
|
The
portraiture of ducks is synonymous with the German
painter Alexander Koester. For most of his working
life he drew inspiration from the feathered
creatures mirrored in the glistening surface of the
water. |
|
It was his
parents wish for him to become a trainee apothecary
in Wintzheim near Colmar. After he finished his
apprenticeship he enrolled at the academy in
Karlsruhe to study under Carl Hoff and Claus Meyer.
|
|
His
extensive travels and his walks in the German and
Austrian Alps were the source of a number of genre
paintings. He dedicated himself more and more to
genre painting and already earned his livelihood as
a student with portrait commissions. After finishing
his studies, Koester moved to Klausen in the Tyrol.
|
|
His new
surrounding inspired him to paint direct from nature
resulting in great productivity. In that process he
discovered the duck in all its variety, a subject
that would preoccupy him for the rest of his career.
Impressions of glittering duck feathers reflecting
in the shimmering water surface are reminiscent of
late impressionism. The subject presented him with
great popularity and success. |

In 1904 he
received a gold medal at the World Fair in St. Louis
for the painting Enten and was awarded a further
gold medal from the Prince Regent Luitpold von
Bayern. |
|
Koester
rented a studio in Munich and from 1908 he regularly
visited the area around Lake Constance to paint the
vast expanse of water. He eventually settled in
