Elmbridge Coucil Announcement on
Olympics Road Race: |
Olympic Road
Cycle Race Comes to Elmbridge
|
|
Elmbridge Borough Council
welcomes LOCOG's* announcement
today that the men's and women's
Olympic cycle road races for the
2012 Games will take place in
Surrey and pass through the
Borough. |
|
Councillor John OReilly, Leader
of the Council said: "It's a
once in a lifetime opportunity
for residents to see the premier
international sporting event
take place in the Borough. Local
businesses will also be able to
benefit. We will be providing
support to businesses over the
coming months to assist them in
benefiting from these Olympic
opportunities. |
|
We appreciate that this will
inevitably cause some disruption
to the Borough, but are
confident that the organisers
will do all in their power to
minimise inconvenience to our
residents." |
|
Councillor Jan Fuller,Portfolio
Holder for Leisure and Culture
said: "I am delighted that
Elmbridge will be involved in
such an exciting and prestigious
event. I look forward to the
Olympics coming to Elmbridge in
2012!" |
|
The route will start and finish
in London and take in about 130
miles of Surrey roads; within
Elmbridge it will pass through
Molesey, Walton and Weybridge on
its way to Box Hill and then
through Oxshott and Esher on the
return to central London. |
|
Spectators lining the route will
provide a huge boost to Surrey's
economy. Kent's staging of a leg
of the Tour De France in 2007
generated an estimated £40
million. |
