Oatlands: Henry VIII's Palace to First World War Hospital

A New Display by the Elmbridge Museum

  • When: Now Until Autumn
  • Where: Elmbridge Borough Council, Civic Centre, Esher, Surrey KT10 9SD
  • Times: 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday
Oatlands House Display By Elmbridge Museum at Esher Civic Centre
Oatlands Palace
Elmbridge Museum has opened a new display entitled Oatlands: From Henry VIII's palace to First World War hospital.

It tells the story of Oatlands from its beginning as one of King Henry VIII's lost palaces up to the present day.

The display opens on Monday 22 June 2015 at the Civic Centre in Esher for a limited period.
Items on display reflect the significance of Oatlands Palace in the Tudor and Stuart periods as a favoured Queen's residence. It follows the story of how the Oatlands name continued, on a different site, as an aristocratic home.
In the eighteenth century, the composer Joseph Haydn recorded a visit to Oatlands House in his diary, remarking that 'the little castle, eighteen miles from London, lies on a slope and commands the most glorious view'. Used as a hospital for New Zealand troops from 1916, Oatlands House later became Oatlands Park Hotel, as it remains to this day.
Elmbridge Museum's mission is to 'engage people with their past, present and future by collecting, preserving and presenting selected and significant objects from the history of Elmbridge, for the purposes of learning and enjoyment'.
Cllr Mary Sheldon, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, said, "The new Elmbridge Museum exhibition at the Civic Centre offers a fascinating insight into the magnificence and local importance of Oatlands.
The Tudor and Stuart artefacts as well as the other items on display from the Museum Collection will shed some light on how Oatlands Palace served the community up to the time when Oatlands House was used as a hospital for New Zealander soldiers and until now as the Oatlands Park Hotel."

Lux Aeterna Concert Walton Voices Summer Concert by Choir at Walton Methodist Church, Walton on Thames Elmbridge
This is our last concert in our 2014 - 15 season and it explores the beauty of contemporary American choral music with composers such as Lauridsen and Whitacre.
After a very challenging year of music making this concert contains possibly some of the most enjoyable pieces to sing with Lauridsen's O Magnum Mysterium being one of the highlights.
We will be holding a collection at the end of the concert to support the National Foundation for Youth Music.

Zumbathon Come & Zumba - Have Fun & Support A Worthwhile Cause

Some of us have been affected by cancer directly or indirectly and would like to see the end of the battle, with survivors on the winning side. Zumbathon - Charity Zumba in New Haw By Kates School Of Dance
We therefore appeal to everyone to visit the Just Giving Zumbathon For Cancer page to donate to this worthy cause.

"My father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the end of March 2012. Before he had any treatment, after 11 weeks, he passed away. He showed no symptoms prior to his diagnosis but by that time it was already too late. The cancer had already left his pancreas. We all miss him every day, 3 years on.
I want to raise money for pancreatic cancer UK in hopes that a screening can be developed to catch and treat this cancer early."
Kate Broughton, principal of Kate's School Of Dance

Bring extra £'s for raffle tickets!
Water will be available throughout the event.
Donating through Just Giving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

MUSIC on the GREEN is based at Christ Church Esher directly opposite and overlooking Esher Green. Its aims are to promote a wide variety of excellent music, to present music in a fresh and engaging way, and to encourage audiences from Esher and beyond.
Our concerts take place in Christ Church at the heart of Esher - a church which boasts an outstanding pipe organ, fine grand piano acquired in 2012 with a very generous loan, and good acoustics which all contribute to making our music so enjoyable.
MUSIC on the GREEN is about making music which is accessible to, and enjoyable by, as many people as possible without it being stuffy or cheapened. This is the reason for the MUSIC on the GREEN ‘brand’ – to give the music an identity of its own.
Music is about people, emotions, history… We blend all these ingredients and seek to present our music in interesting and rewarding ways, within its own context so that it can be widely appreciated and enjoyed.

Rollin' By The River - Molesey Regatta Concert

Elmbridge Ladies Choir

Thrilled to be performing a charity concert at one of their favourite venues, the 90-strong Elmbridge Ladies Choir has been invited once again to provide the musical entertainment for the Molesey Amateur Regatta on Saturday 18th July.
Rollin By The River - Molesey Regatta Concert

‘When we’ve performed here before our audience has filled the marquee and spilled out onto the riverside – we hope to do that again in support of this fantastic cause!’
‘Rollin’ by the River’ will start at 8.00pm after the day’s rowing has come to an end, and will be held undercover in a marquee on the river bank at Hurst Park, Molesey (via Ferry Road). There will be a bar selling real ale and Pimms, and tables and chairs provided for picnics.
Entry to watch the regatta is free during the day, however entry to the evening’s concert is ticketed

‘Rollin’ by the River’ promises a delightful mix of popular music from the fun-filled 60s to more recent pop hits, from the Beatles to Bon Jovi, Etta James to Kelly Clarkson and Tina Turner to Il Divo!
‘We have a great variety of songs, some of which we are looking forward to performing for the first time,’ says Dale Thomas, Music Director of the choir.
‘It’s fantastic to be back at the Regatta again – as well as being a beautiful location right by the riverside, it holds good memories for many of our members as it’s the venue of our first ever concert back in 2009!’
Choir members requested that the proceeds from this concert are given to Woking & Sam Beare Hospice. ‘Many of our members or their families have had personal experience of the excellent services provided by the Hospice and wanted to be able to give a little back,’ explains Dale.
Elmbridge Ladies Choir will be singing at the East Molesey Regatta in July
All are welcome - arrive early with a picnic and enjoy a drink from the bar while listening to some lively and quite lovely songs from this fantastic choir.

Introduce your baby to songs, rhymes
and books at your library!
Weybridge Library - Fun for the children
Library rhymetime sessions are aimed at babies and toddlers, aged under 5, along with their parents and carers. The events are based entirely on sharing nursery rhymes, action songs and percussion music. It is fun, interactive and noisy!
Nursery rhymes are great for language development - they have a lot of rhythm which catch baby’s attention, and repetition, which is good for speech development. It is also a nice way of introducing babies and toddlers to their local library!
Rhymetimes start with finger rhymes and action songs. Percussion instruments accompany the rhythmic songs and the sessions end with some closing songs.
Tickets are free and must be booked in person by coming into the library between Sunday and Wednesday for the Thursday Rhymetimes.
For Saturday Rhyme sessions, you can book your place by coming into the library in person any time from the Saturday before. We look forward to seeing you there.
