TALK Surrey

Charity Supporting People With Aphasia After Stroke

TALK - Helping people to communicate after stroke.
Since 1998 TALK has been helping stroke recoverers with dysphasia to regain lost skills. Weekly meetings enable members to practise their communication skills in a supportive and sociable environment.

Talk Surrey - The Charity to help stroke recoverers with dysphasia to regain lost skills

TALK works closely with local speech and language therapists who help to train our volunteers. Each recoverer is helped by a volunteer on a one-to-one basis.
TALK received the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service for 2005, in recognition of the outstanding contribution made by our volunteers
About Dysphasia

Dysphasia (or aphasia) is a difficulty with language. A person with dysphasia (probably following a stroke) may have difficulty in speaking, understanding, reading or writing. In short, communication can be a very daunting challenge.

Most of us are instinctively shy when we meet someone with communication difficulties; and yet imagine being in their position. Frustrated because you can't get your point across, although your intellect is quite undamaged; you can't argue, you can't chat with friends as you used to. You know what you want to say, but you can't say it. The telephone can be a nightmare, as can shopping, dealing with money, reading train or bus timetables.

Dysphasia can affect relationships, work, personality. The resulting loneliness and isolation affect not only the recoverer's quality of life, but that of family and carers. Sometimes called the 'hidden disability', loss of language is not officially recognized as a disability - despite a quarter of a million people in the UK suffering from dysphasia.

Adapting to and Living with Aphasia by the Wife of a Stroke Recoverer

We thought we knew the importance of communication - after all we had been teachers for over thirty years. However, until David’s severe stroke in July 2002, we didn’t know how difficult life could be without speech. His aphasia (or dysphasia) a communication disability, occurred when communication centres of the brain were damaged by a stroke.

After six months in hospital, his physical ability had improved and we thought the worst was over. But, when David came home it was devastating to realise how our lives had to change as we had to communicate by expression, mime, diagrams and pictures.

Early on I realised our roles and those of our three children had to change. We no longer had the same income and our life style had to alter. Now I was the only person who could drive, write letters, deal with bills and mortgages and I also had to deal with problems such as David’s recurring fits. Gradually, I helped him form and say words and slowly read again.

We started to visit ‘TALK’ to practise his communication skills. I was keen to support other people so after volunteering at Guildford I am now leader of the Walton group. We also visited Connect in Borough, where we received support and encouragement (three of our remaining parents had died within a year and money was a problem). It was helpful to attend groups for people with aphasia and carers where we met others in the same situation. Now David and I volunteer at events by sharing our experiences and giving tips and advice for living with aphasia.

David continues to improve every week and he remains cheerful and positive. I have made great strides as I have completed my MA with a dissertation about Aphasia and received an award for voluntary support. We are enjoying life and the time we spend together.

Over 40,000 people live with aphasia in the UK but it is still not a word most people are familiar with. The value of TALK, Connect and similar groups that help communication in a friendly environment, cannot be over-emphasised.J

TALK - Walton on Thames Group

Where we meet: The Day Centre, Manor Road, Walton on Thames, Surrey KT12 2BP
When we meet: Monday afternoons, 1.45pm until 3.45pm during term time.

Mayor of Elmbridge visits TALK

The Walton Group, which began in June 2004, supports people with dysphasia or aphasia following a stroke. On Monday 30th June the Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Nigel Cooper, and the Mayoress, Mrs Cooper, visited our Walton group. The theme of the afternoon was ‘Sport’- something which the Mayor knows a great deal about. Cllr Cooper was able to join in enthusiastically with the Group.
About TALK Walton On Thames Group

TALK helps people with dysphasia/aphasia to practise their communication and reasoning skills in a supportive environment and to improve the quality of their lives by rebuilding their confidence.

We have one volunteer for each recoverer so there is plenty of help available.

TALK Group Walton on Thames Surrey

Walton TALK Group Members

We now have 21 recoverers and 22 volunteers. Our volunteers also attend regular training sessions.

Each session has a different theme which the recoverers will find interesting and is led by different volunteers.

The sessions may involve a talk, slides, questions, worksheets or practical activities and are designed to encourage communication, conversation and literacy skills in an adult yet relaxed, supportive and cheerful environment.

Our recent themes have included vehicles, Surrey, Queen Victoria, laughter, food, sport, gardens, holidays in Columbia, Nepal, Thailand and Cambodia, a visit from an artist, a computer session and music and games.

After a break for a drink and biscuit, the theme is continued, concentrating on communication and conversation. A variety of pictures, objects and prompts are used.

This year TALK is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Many of the group went to a New Year meal in Guildford, a service in Guildford Cathedral and attended a celebration meal in Normandy, Surrey.

The Walton group is one of three TALK groups that have been working in partnership with Connect - the national communication disability network based in London. We are trialling several conversational ideas and reporting back to Connect about their usefulness.

We hope to improve the conversational opportunities of our groups and to help Connect’s research. The aim is to develop a resource for organisations across the UK, which will provide conversation opportunities for people with aphasia.
