Oatlands: Henry VIII's Palace to First World War Hospital

A New Display by the Elmbridge Museum

  • When: Now Until Autumn
  • Where: Elmbridge Borough Council, Civic Centre, Esher, Surrey KT10 9SD
  • Times: 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday
Oatlands House Display By Elmbridge Museum at Esher Civic Centre
Oatlands Palace
Elmbridge Museum has opened a new display entitled Oatlands: From Henry VIII's palace to First World War hospital.

It tells the story of Oatlands from its beginning as one of King Henry VIII's lost palaces up to the present day.

The display opens on Monday 22 June 2015 at the Civic Centre in Esher for a limited period.
Items on display reflect the significance of Oatlands Palace in the Tudor and Stuart periods as a favoured Queen's residence. It follows the story of how the Oatlands name continued, on a different site, as an aristocratic home.
In the eighteenth century, the composer Joseph Haydn recorded a visit to Oatlands House in his diary, remarking that 'the little castle, eighteen miles from London, lies on a slope and commands the most glorious view'. Used as a hospital for New Zealand troops from 1916, Oatlands House later became Oatlands Park Hotel, as it remains to this day.
Elmbridge Museum's mission is to 'engage people with their past, present and future by collecting, preserving and presenting selected and significant objects from the history of Elmbridge, for the purposes of learning and enjoyment'.
Cllr Mary Sheldon, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, said, "The new Elmbridge Museum exhibition at the Civic Centre offers a fascinating insight into the magnificence and local importance of Oatlands.
The Tudor and Stuart artefacts as well as the other items on display from the Museum Collection will shed some light on how Oatlands Palace served the community up to the time when Oatlands House was used as a hospital for New Zealander soldiers and until now as the Oatlands Park Hotel."

Capturing the atmosphere of Club meetings in the 1930s, the new style Brooklands Reunion sees us remember the final race meetings held at Brooklands before the outbreak of WW2.

The site will be filled with the actual cars, motorcycles and bicycles that raced here from 1907-1939. We will also be welcoming other pre-War vehicles, which will be parked up, as spectators’ vehicles would have been on race days. Vintage car on Brooklands Museum test Hill

Enjoy the spectacle of the Test Hill (see photo on right) - Cameras are a must for this event!

This year’s Brooklands Reunion will mark the 80th anniversaries of two outstanding records set at Brooklands: the BRDC 500-Miles Race of 21st September 1935 (won at an average speed of 121.28mph by the Napier-Railton, faster than for any other pre-war 500-mile race) and the Outer-Circuit Lap Record, set on 7th October 1935 and held in perpetuity by the Napier-Railton at 143.44mph. The silk banner awarded to John Cobb for winning the BRDC 500 will be on public display for the first time since it was acquired by the Museum in 2013.

Sun 16 is Brooklands Reunion. Join us for a 1930s race day with Test Hill, Race Grids & more

Amongst the special Brooklands racing cars already booked to appear on the day are Tom McWhirter’s ex Tommy Wisdom Jaguar SS100, Alastair Pugh’s 1932 TT Replica Frazer Nash, Peter Colborne-Baber’s Stafford Special, David Hescroff’s AC Acedes, the six-cylinder MGs of Mike Allison and David Naylor, Clive Warrell’s Essex and Jerry Larke’s Morgan Brooklands Aero.
There will be plenty of action on site as well, including Test Hill demonstrations, a cavalcade on the Mercedes-Benz World track and over on the Finishing Straight, the pre-War racing cars will form up in ‘grids’, which will be sent off up the Finishing Straight towards the Members’ Banking. MUSIC on the GREEN is based at Christ Church Esher directly opposite and overlooking Esher Green. Its aims are to promote a wide variety of excellent music, to present music in a fresh and engaging way, and to encourage audiences from Esher and beyond.
Our concerts take place in Christ Church at the heart of Esher - a church which boasts an outstanding pipe organ, fine grand piano acquired in 2012 with a very generous loan, and good acoustics which all contribute to making our music so enjoyable.
MUSIC on the GREEN is about making music which is accessible to, and enjoyable by, as many people as possible without it being stuffy or cheapened. This is the reason for the MUSIC on the GREEN ‘brand’ – to give the music an identity of its own.
Music is about people, emotions, history… We blend all these ingredients and seek to present our music in interesting and rewarding ways, within its own context so that it can be widely appreciated and enjoyed.

Weybridge Library - Fun for the children
Library rhymetime sessions are aimed at babies and toddlers, aged under 5, along with their parents and carers. The events are based entirely on sharing nursery rhymes, action songs and percussion music. It is fun, interactive and noisy!
Nursery rhymes are great for language development - they have a lot of rhythm which catch baby’s attention, and repetition, which is good for speech development. It is also a nice way of introducing babies and toddlers to their local library!
Rhymetimes start with finger rhymes and action songs. Percussion instruments accompany the rhythmic songs and the sessions end with some closing songs.
Tickets are free and must be booked in person by coming into the library between Sunday and Wednesday for the Thursday Rhymetimes.
For Saturday Rhyme sessions, you can book your place by coming into the library in person any time from the Saturday before. We look forward to seeing you there.
