Features Elmbridge Meals On Wheels
The Hairy Bikers have thrown a spotlight on the
Meals on Wheels service as part of their new
series on BBC TWO.
Dave and Si have been
working with the cooks and staff of Elmbridge
Council's Molesey Centre to highlight that the
Great British Institution "Meals on Wheels" can
still be a vibrant and modern service fit for
purpose in the 21st Century.
During the filming of the four part series that is due to
be aired commencing on the 13th September, the Duchess of Cornwall,
an honorary member of the National Association of Care
Caterers, visited the Centre to meet with volunteers,
Meals on Wheels Customers and staff. The Duchess
contributed a family fish pie recipe for the Hairy Bikers
to use as part of the new menu.
Meals on Wheels started
during World War II to provide hot meals to
families in Wellyn affected by the Luftwaffe
bombing raids. Sixty years on the services have
spread across the UK providing a hot and

This essential service
allows individuals to remain independent in their
homes and also provides peace of mind that someone
will be popping in on a daily basis to say hello
and make sure everything is okay.
The Elmbridge Meals on Wheels service
has been established
for 40 years and provides meals from the Council's Centres
for the Community which are delivered to older people's
homes by volunteer drivers. In the last year alone 59,887
meals were provided to Elmbridge residents.
The Hairy Bikers have
revamped the Meals on Wheels menus, introducing
delicious new recipes made with fresh ingredients.
Their other aim was to recruit voluntary delivery
drivers and kitchen helpers in order to bolster
the number of the dedicated army of volunteers who
currently help make Meals on Wheels possible. As
part of the series the Hairy Bikers took Meals on
Wheels on the road.
They organised the world's largest cottage pie, made
by the students at Brooklands College, and travelled
through the streets of Elmbridge with the pie and finished
with a Volunteer pledge event.

The Bikers were helped by advertising company Saatchi X to
brand the Meals on Wheels service - they designed a logo
to give the service a clear brand identity. This new logo
was used on a billboard in Elmbridge to raise awareness of
Meals on Wheels in the community.
Towards the end of the filming the Bikers were joined by a
raft of celebrities and national organisations to
celebrate Meals on Wheels and promote the need for it to

We have been
trying to recruit new volunteers to deliver Meals
on Wheels to older people in Elmbridge, so to have
a national TV programme to help is an added bonus.
It was also a pleasure to meet Dave and Si and see
their genuine passion for the service."
