Surrey Community Music Society (Surrey Music)
Two community choirs making one musical family of 240 volunteer members.
Formed in 2005 by Cliff van Tonder, Surrey Music consists of two choirs – Elmbridge Choir and Elmbridge Ladies Choir which include members drawn from right across Surrey
The society consists of two choirs – Elmbridge Choir and Elmbridge Ladies Choir.

In doing what they love best – making music - members of the society have helped charities across a broad spectrum raise much needed funds through their concerts and performances. Surrey Music is proud to have raised over £153,189 over the last 10 years for charitable purposes. The society has awarded more than £12,000 in grants for music related projects and activities in Surrey.
Both choirs have a large and varied repertoire from choral classics, to pop, rock and songs from the musicals. Emphasis at rehearsal and at concerts is on having fun, entertaining and engaging with the audience.
Most importantly everyone in the society share the same principles and ethos: to bring joy to others and themselves through music, and to give something back to the community.
Little wonder that the society’s slogan is “Music with a Heart”!

Elmbridge Choir includes singers from Weybridge, Walton-on-Thames, Hersham, Cobham, Esher, Oxshot, Claygate, East Molesey, Thames Ditton, Long Ditton,Woking
Elmbridge Choir
In 2005 Cliff van Tonder founded Elmbridge Choir which is a mixed-voice, 140-strong community choir. Membership is open to any person over 16.
There is no audition and no requirement for a trained voice or previous experience; anyone is welcome to become part of the choir.
Prospective members are required only to complete an online registration form to join, although there is a waiting list.
Although most choir members are from the Elmbridge area, you are not ineligible if you live outside Elmbridge - we also have choir members who live outside the area.

Cliff van Tonder
Musical Director of Elmbridge Choir

Cliff Van Tonder Musical Director of Elmbridge Choir
Cliff was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and spent 25 years directing and conducting congregational and regional choirs all over Southern Africa. It was his involvement in the Nkosi Johnson AIDS foundation and his desire to increase awareness of the devastation caused by AIDS that sparked the idea of forming his first choir in South Africa, Sandton Choir, which helped to raise thousands of life-saving pounds for children’s charities in and around Johannesburg.
Despite his passion for music and his vast experience of leading choirs, Cliff had no formal musical training. His earliest and perhaps fondest musical memories are of teaching himself to play the organ in his local church in Durban and bravely offering his services to lead the church choir!
In 1981 Cliff conceptualized and presented the first ever Choir Festival in South Africa which spread out all over the country. His personal musical highlight in South Africa was directing a mass choir of over 1,800 members in Durban City Hall in September 1986.
With such drive and motivation it is hardly surprising that a year after arriving in the UK in 2004, Cliff formed Elmbridge Choir, with the mission to create a way for people from all walks of life, regardless of their musical ability, to share their passion for singing whilst giving something back to their community.

Combat Stress Charity - Part of Mayor of Kingston's Charity Appeal 2009

Forces Children's Trust - Part of Mayor of Kingston's Charity Appeal 2009

The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign supports the work of The Royal Marsden, raising money to help the hospital stay at the leading edge of cancer treatment and care.
With your help we can continue to provide the 40,000 patients we see each year with the facilities, treatment and care that can help them beat cancer. By supporting our appeals you are making a real difference to everyone who walks though our doors.
Combat Stress, established in 1919, is a charity providing specialist psychological support and treatment to Veterans of wars, peacekeeping missions and emergency relief operations who have been traumatised by the harrowing events they have been through during their Service

For many who are affected, the problems may take years, perhaps decades to surface.

The Ex-Services Mental Welfare Society, Combat Stress, exists to serve these men and women.

Force's children's Trust, established in 2004, is a charity devoted to helping children in need whose father or mother has died, or been seriously injured, whilst serving as a member of the British Armed Forces. The charity was established following the many heart-breaking stories that emerged from the losses in Afghanistan and Iraq, in an effort to fill a gap in the charitable field of family care.

Oasis Child Care Charity

Elmbridge Child Care Charity Oasis - based in Cobham Surrey

Working with vulnerable children and their families throughout Elmbridge
Oasis believes every child has a right to security, love and a stable environment in which they can develop their full potential.
It was the recognition that this was an impossible ideal in a great number of families that led to the formation of Oasis in 1996 to work throughout the Borough of Elmbridge.
The stress and pressures of modern society always affect those least able to cope, those in critically dysfunctional family situations, some single parents, those with alcoholic and/or drug dependencies and those in severe financial hardship.
The helpless victims of all this pressure have always been children, the people with the least resistance to emotional confusion, stress and pain.  Oasis Child Care Charity website
Royal Hospital For Neuro-Disabilty
The RHN provides specialist assessment and multidisciplinary clinical rehabilitation services which transform the independence, confidence, dignity, and quality of life for patients with brain injury and neurological diseases.

Dale Thomas, Musical Diector Elmbridge Ladies Choir
Dale Thomas
The Musical Director is Mrs Dale Thomas, who was once herself a member of the choir.
This choir is also non-audition and welcomes applications from all women, regardless of experience or ability.

Dale Thomas
Musical Director of Elmbridge Ladies Choir
Dale Thomas was appointed as Musical Director of the Elmbridge Ladies Choir in January 2011. Although new to conducting when she took on this role, she has sung for many years in choirs in her school, university, church, and community, and also has experience in musical theatre.
A primary school teacher by profession, Dale thoroughly enjoys combining her passions for education and music in her work with the Ladies Choir.
Under her leadership the choir has flourished and has grown to a staggering 100 ladies, and through her efforts they recently achieved a Bronze medal at the 2011 Krakow International Advent Festival.
Raised in Texas, Dale moved to the UK with her husband and four children in 2006. She has found the choir to be a fantastic way to get involved in the local community and to meet a wonderful mix of people from all walks of life. She is hugely thankful to Cliff van Tonder and the women of the Ladies Choir for giving her the opportunity to stretch her own abilities and learn something new, and she’s tremendously proud of the ladies of the choir for challenging themselves in the same way.
With Dale's encouragement and training, the choir has gradually moved to performing without their sheet music, in order to immerse themselves more fully in the musical experience and to engage more with their audiences. Dale emphasises fun and community at rehearsals, resulting in more cohesive, committed performances from the choir, as well.

Success At International Christmas Festival In Bratislava
Both Elmbridge choirs were delighted with their success in Bratislava. The Ladies Choir received a Bronze Award and the Mixed Choir a Silver Award in a competition judged by an international panel of 6 Professors & Doctors of Music (including Russia, Slovakia, Poland & Germany).
