About The Charity |
|
The Anne Campbell Charitable Trust was created at the
beginning of 2011. In April 2010, following Anne’s death in
March 2009, we organised a memorial concert in her name at
St Mary Oatlands, Weybridge, Surrey. |
|
This featured a programme of sacred music culminating in a
performance of Fauré’s Requiem, a choral work for which Anne
had always held a particular love. We had managed to secure
the services of an outstanding choir of professional
singers, drawn from amongst the membership of London’s
foremost, choral ensembles. They had been brought together
by, and sang under the direction of, David Clegg, an
accomplished counter tenor who regularly sings with ‘The
16’. |
|
Proceeds from the sale of tickets were to be donated to the
British Sjogren’s Syndrome Association (BSSA), a small
charity which supports those who like Anne did, suffer from
this debilitating and incurable auto-immune condition. |
 |
|
That concert was a great success, providing a donation of
over £1,800 to the BSSA. It also demonstrated to an
outstanding degree the remarkable acoustics of this church
(which will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2012)and its
eminent suitability as a venue for choral concerts of the
highest standard. Having determined fairly quickly (in fact,
just 2 days after the concert!) that it would be a lost
opportunity if we were not to repeat the exercise, Anne’s
family decided that we would make this an annual event.
Obviously, this would require us to place the whole exercise
on a more formal and structured footing. |
|
In early July 2010, through Stone King solicitors (who
provide specialist expertise in this area), a submission was
made for registration with the Charity Commission; one was
also made to Companies House for registration as a company
limited by guarantee. Having taken the opportunity to
consider the wider possibilities presented by creating our
own charity, the objects of The Anne Campbell Charitable
Trust were expanded beyond just staging choral concerts. To
paraphrase the entry now listed on The Charity Commission
website, they are: |
1. The advancement of the arts, including the staging of
public performances of classical music;
2. The
advancement of education, particularly in the arts and
sciences;
3. The advancement of health, including
research into the treatment of disability, illness and other
medical conditions; and
4. other charitable purposes
as the Trustees see fit
By expanding the objects of
the charity in this way, it has created an efficient vehicle
for funding to be provided for other purposes. For example,
it is our intention to offer a course of high quality
singing lessons to a winning candidate selected from within
the sixth forms at schools in Surrey. A number of suitable
applicants will be invited to a ‘master class’ with someone
of significant, professional stature, who subsequently will
select a winner. Following the series of lessons, that lucky
person will then give a solo performance during the next
year’s concert.
Anne’s daughter, Emily, has
generously sponsored awards at both her old school and her
Oxford college, both in her mother’s name. She has created
‘The Anne Campbell Law Award’ at The Abbey School, Reading,
and ‘The Anne Campbell Law Scholarship’ at Christ Church,
Oxford.
Anne’s son, Christopher, has a daughter,
Alice, who was born profoundly deaf and has been fitted with
a cochlear implant (and shortly to receive a second, the
first having proved a great success). He and his wife,
Claire, have created ‘The Anne Campbell Bursary’ for the
benefit of ‘Auditory Verbal UK’, the charity which provides
support and education to children who are learning to listen
and speak with cochlear implants. The scholarship will help
in training new specialists working in this exacting field.
