Building & Atmosphere |
|
|
| The Prince of Wales is a traditional pub built in 1854. It's
cosy and welcoming. In winter you will enjoy the roaring log
fire.
Attractive hanging baskets adorn the outside and fresh
flowers add colour and atmosphere inside. |
|
 |
|
 |
|
There's a lot of memorabilia to add interest and character,
particularly sporting memorabilia, including rugby, cricket
& football. |
|
|
Brian & Pat Ford |
|
|
|
Brian and Pat Ford have been Landlords of The Prince of
Wales pub since 1997, having previously been landlords at the
Queens Head in Weybridge for 4 years. Pat's delicious home
cooking has earned a well-deserved reputation for quality
and attractive presentation. Brian is well-known as a
colourful character whose notoriety came to the attention of
London's Capital Radio audience in a wind-up by DJ Steve Penk. |
| Brian and Pat have a great sense
of humour, as can be observed around the pub by the
memorabilia and other displays which include a poem
about Brian (at his expense) and a framed beer
advert "Beer - helping ugly people have sex since
1862". One of the Real Ales is even called 'Old
Tosser' with a picture of Brian on the Hand Pump! |
 |
|
|
As you can probably guess from the memorabilia
in the pub, Brian is
passionate about sport, particularly rugby and golf. The
Walton and Weybridge Golf Society is based at The Prince of
Wales (13 meetings a year) and Brian is the current
Chairman. |

History & Folklore |
|
|
|
The eldest son of the reigning
monarch of Great Britain is traditionally invested
with the title of Prince of Wales. This tradition
began in 1301, when King Edward I of England, having
completed the Norman conquest of Wales gave the
title to his heir, Prince Edward (later King Edward
II of England). |

|
Anderson Road Weybridge 1911 |
|
We don't exactly know why the pub
(built in 1854) is called The Prince of Wales, but
we do know that in 1790 the Duke of York, Frederick
Augustus of Hanover, 2nd son of George III, took up
residence in Oatlands. After marriage ceremonies in
1791 in Berlin and London, the 28 year old Duke
brought his new 24 year old Duchess the
daughter of the King of Prussia to Oatlands. He was
the 'Grand Old Duke of York, who had ten thousand
men' from the Children's nursery rhyme. |
