History
The Byfleet Art Group was founded in 1968 in a very small way when a few budding artists met at the Byfleet Village Hall to paint together. Due to the interest of the headmaster of the local St.Mary's School, the artists were invited to use the hall at his school. After many happy years there, finances forced them to move to various venues in Byfleet, but in 1996 the group turned full circle and returned to St Mary's School and are still using this venue for their weekly meetings. Still hanging in the school hall is the large oil painting of Mill Lane, Byfleet, which was presented to the school in 1970 by one of the Group's tutors, the late John Brangwyn, to commemorate the school's project devoted to Conservation Year.
 

Current Activities
Over the years the membership has been constant and approximately 70 members enrol each year. The Group meet every Tuesday in term-time from 7pm to 10pm. Members paint together with help from Tutors whenever required and occasionally still life, portrait sessions and workshops are arranged. Every year two indoor exhibitions are held at the Catholic Church Hall, Madeira Road, West Byfleet, and one very popular summer open-air event on Plough Green, Byfleet.

Occasionally members enjoy an evening off when visiting professional artists demonstrate their skills in various media. Non-members are very welcome to attend these demonstrations.
