"I thought you might wish to receive an
update on crime issues across Elmbridge
borough. We have just received the
figures up to the end of July covering
the last 4 months. |
|
Overall the Total Notifiable Offences
recorded in Elmbridge by Surrey Police
have risen just slightly by 1.7%
compared to the same period last year.
This equates to an increase of 44
incidents of crime compared to the same
period last year. |
|
Looking at the different types of crimes
the figures show: |
|
Criminal Damage offences are down 21%
(-141 incidents) Most Serious Violence
against the Person down 40% (-4
incidents) Other Violence against the
Person up 2% (+ 9 incidents) |
|
There are three particular areas where
crime has increased compared to the same
period last year |
Burglary non residential which covers
sheds, garages and of course business
premises has risen by 41% (+ 67
incidents)
Theft of cycle has increased 59% (+ 41
incidents),
Vehicle Crime up 25% (+ 68 incidents). |
|
Please bear in mind that the percentage
change can alter quite a lot when
dealing with low numbers. |
|
Elmbridge remains one of the safest
Boroughs in the Country but we cannot be
complacent. Any crime is significant to
the victim and we still need to drive
the figures even lower and to do that we
need your help. |
|
There is roughly now only 12 crimes
every 24 hours in Elmbridge much of this
down to the ongoing good work of our
police colleagues. These numbers when
looking at the size and population of
Elmbridge makes it extremely difficult
for the police to know when and where.
to be, to arrest or deter the offenders.
|
|
We need to keep residents informed of
what is happening and engage them in
taking the sensible precautions which
will help prevent them from becoming a
victim of crime in the first place. |
|
The credit crunch is not helping us, as
work slows and cash becomes restricted
the anticipated increase in opportunist
crime is starting to take place. |
|
The theft of easily disposable items has
increased significantly. Theft and
handling of stolen goods is up 19% (85
incidents). |
|
Whilst the figures for burglary have
remained static this year (148 incidents
or 2 incidents every 3 days) those from
the less secure garages and sheds and
from parked vehicles have increased
significantly. |
|
The economic downturn may also account
for the 23% increase (+27 incidents) of
domestic violence during this period as
pressures increase on families. |
Reporting Crime
|
|
Above all we need both residents and
business to report incidents of crime
and anti social behaviour, if we want
the police or other resources to an
area, we need to know what is going on
and when incidents are taking place. By
mapping this information over time it
helps build up a better understanding of
the problems and what can be done to
make the largest impact on deterring
future incidents. |
